After a tremendous week of ministry and good health, several of our students succumbed to Montezuma's Revenge. The trouble hit about midnight the night before we travelled and made for a challenging trip home. The airline ended up contacting the local paramedics at the airport to provide us with some support for some of our students who were still feeling really bad. The paramedics came on board to provide assistance and somehow the news media got word of our predicament (must have been a slow news day) and several of our team actually made the 6 0'clock news. I love what one our students said, "I sure ate something pretty bad over there." Well the good news is that everyone is home now and happy to be in their own beds tonight. I know that you all will enjoy having your own students share with you their experience personally. It has been my pleasure to help keep you connected while they were away. May God richly bless your families as our team leaders were richly blessed by your students. Adios. After a full and amazing day of touring I managed to get some students to share a little note to their families. If you students did not write....please do not despair....they were either asleep or were so excited talking about the day that they did not hear the announcement to come to my room to write a note. I can assure you that everyone is present and accounted for.

Today we took a luxury bus complete with air conditioning (woo hoo!) to Chichen Itzu. This place is in contention to be considered as an addition to the 7 Modern Wonders of the World...something like that. Anyway it was quite amazing! We had very interesting guides and learned some really cool stuff that I will let your students tell you about! After our time of knowledge and exploration we then went to a special underground spring called a "cenote" for a some real fun. Wait until you see those pictures! This place had to be one of the most beautiful sites I have ever visited with openings in the ceiling where the sun broke through and water trickeled in from above also complete with hanging vines. Post card picture perfect place! The water was so icy cold and refreshing! We swam with catfish and I am here to say that I saw some of the most professional cannonball deliveries ever noted in our current day. We even had a "group jump" and it is on video as proof. After our swim we then headed out for an "all you can eat buffet" complete with bottle balancing mexican dancers as entertainment. We then headed back to the hotel, had a good nap on the bus on the way back.....a time of fun and comaraderie in the hotel lobby, pizza on the steps outside of the hotel, one final run on the ice cream shop across the street and now we are off to our debrief. Wanted to get this off before you went to bed. That's all for the moment.

Mexico Student Blogs:

Tory Lanza – mom, Chris, pops, and grapes lol see you soon everyone LOVE YOU GUYS!!

Max Brandte – mom I love u

SHANE-I’m moving here. The truth is today was simply a great day! Up bright and early for devotions and breakfast and then off to experience a Calvary Chapel Merida church service. The worship was exciting with many familiar worship songs....only the words were spelled and arranged a bit differently. :) Our group then led the congregation with a few of our own worship songs. Pastor Mike and Robert Aguayo teamed up for the bilingual message of encouragement for the community. The extra special activity planned for this day was to break up into smaller groups and to have lunch in the homes of various families from the church. Each team was assigned one of our faithful Spanish speaking students and off they went into the unknown. The whole adventure could not have gone better! The families from the church went above and beyond and welcomed our children into their homes as members of their families. I could not even begin to do the whole experience justice but here are a few words from the debrief......the families were so "generous, hospitable, friendly, and thoughtful! The experience was awesome, amazing, unforgettable! The food was great, we were so stuffed we couldn't eat another bite!" We presented each family with a little gift from our group and in turn many of the students received small remembrances from their host families. The experience was definitely family centered and very relational. For my group, we started out at the home of our host couple and their two boys and then ended up at Grandma's house and before the afternoon was over, the other grandmother came by along with the uncles and aunts and all the cousins....the group just got larger and larger and the chairs were gathered from all parts of the house. The reports from all the teams had a similar theme, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and they made us feel at home and made us feel part of the family. We all hung out and talked and played games and watched futbol and shared stories. We prayed for each and exchanged e-mail addresses. I am certain that this experience will a highlight of the trip for your student. Back to the hotel for a quick rest and then we had a chance to tour the city on an open air bus....thank goodness it wasn't a walking tour! Afterwards, we were off to a major mall in the area for some good old mall "food court" meals! A little window shopping and then home to the hotel for our debrief and off to bed. Tomorrow we will head out bright and early for our trip to the ruins and then back to pack our bags to come home. I will post a flight schedule reminder and any special instructions tomorrow. Everyone is doing very well. Continue to stand with us in prayer for protection, safe travels and good health! Again everyone is well! :) I hear the pillow calling my name. Hasta Pronto! Pastor Mike gave a very insightful and practical presentation the first evening which focused on the scripture verse in Mark 12:29. “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all of your mind, and with all your strength.” He likened purity to a direction-- not simply a line you either touch or come close to touching or not but rather a direction in which you are heading. The word picture that he shared was one of an escalator – are you trying to walk against it? Is it taking you backwards? or are you moving in the right direction? Our students then broke out into small groups for a time for Q & A. Today the focus of the message was on Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength. Our students performed a variety of skits to bring home the message and then facilitated group discussions by breaking into even smaller groups of girls and separate groups for guys. It will be interesting to hear their downloads when they get back home about the challenges they faced with communication and sharing cross culturally.

Last night the team had a late evening dinner at a local and very authentic Mexico restaurant. You could see the meat roasting on the grill in an open fire pit and they brought platters “family style” to the tables. We had the full experience from the first course of appetizers with nachos, baked potatoes and roasted whole onions to share, red bean soup, tortillas, to plates of roasted chicken and skirt steak. Needless to say our guys were especially happy and completely enjoyed this cultural eating experience. Today the church family brought out the grills and prepared true hamburgers for the group complete with beef patties and cheese and a piece of ham…thus the “hamburger”! (Please note: students with special diet needs are being accommodated!) A “futbol” game is scheduled for later this afternoon and then another trip to an authentic Mexican restaurant this evening.

Most of our meals have been catered by a local Yucatan catering service so every meal has had a real authentic flavor. Our lunches and dinners have been brought into the church and served buffet style. The last two days, the students have been able to expand this experience by actually eating outside of the church fellowship hall. There is also an ice cream store right across the street from our hotel that serves delicious gelato type ice cream and I have been able to find the local equivalent to Starbucks and my new drink of choice these days is a Lechero! Just so you know. The team will debrief this evening and tomorrow we will attend the Calvary Chapel Church service. Please continue to pray for good health and strength and continued positive hearts. The plan is to be able to fellowship with several families from the church in their homes on Sunday afternoon. There is a special sightseeing day planned for Monday. Stay tuned. I am passing on all the “shout outs” to your students.

La Vida Pura

The team was able to sleep in this morning and we were able to catch up on our sleep! We made a visit to a Montessori school where the older Aguayo children attend and shared our team presentations for this great group of students. We experienced another delicious authentic Mexican lunch and after a quick siesta the teams are now preparing for the evening event. They have broken up into small groups where we will have a welcome team, others are preparing mini skits, while othere will share their testimonies. This a "ground breaking" event as the church community has not held and event like this before. The students are a bit anxious as to how it will all go but they are also excited and determined to give it their best! The conference begins tonight at 7 p.m. (8 p.m. your time). Please continue to pray that they would be empowered by God's Holy Spirit for ministry and for favor. Again, you would be proud. Today is a hot day, we are drinking lots of water and staying in the shade and close to fans! I hear a cold water bottle calling my name! All for now. We were able to break into two chapel teams and presented our entire program simultaneously in two places and covered all of our bases! It was a wonderful time of fellowship with these children from Pre-K through 6th grade. After the visit to the school, we were able to take a trip to the local artisan market where several of our students experienced a cultural exchange....as in pesos for trinkets. :)

I would like to take this opportunity to give a "shout out!" to Pat Cannon who took the time and shared her talents and expertise with out team to put together this amazing Gospel presentation program. Her training provided the basis for our VBS programs and the students took the foundational teachings that she laid out and have added their own special touches. Just a quick review of the team set up. We broke out into four ministry teams named Team GOD, Team JESUS, Team SIN and Team FAITH. We then visited four unique and distinct places for our presentations rotating the location each day. At the end of the day today each site had received the WHOLE picture....that God is the creator of all and that He is holy and just, that He sent his son JESUS, who came from Heaven to earth, He lived a perfect life and paid the price for our SINS...they learned all the ways that SIN separates us from GOD and that through the blood of Jesus our sins are covered and we are set free from the bondage of death. By FAITH we learned that we need to trust GOD with our whole heart, we learned how to lean with our whole selves and to not simply believe with our heads but with our whole hearts. We were able to leave them with special coloring books that reviewed the various stories, we shared Bible stories through the use of story bags, we made special wordless book bracelets and shared with them about the Armor of God. On this last day each group left behind craft supplies and game supplies as gifts to the community. Teamwork, flexibility, power of prayer, perseverence, strength of the Lord, unity and daily being filled with the Spirit were the key words from tonight's debrief. As I have shared before, the teams have really taken advantage of the opportunity to spend time together and many teams have had special times for sharing their personal testimonies with each other. When they take the time to learn about their differences and they have more information along with explanation this has all led to new understandings.

Tomorrow we visit one more school and then we will put the finishing touches on our team presentations for the purity conference which will begin at the church tomorrow evening. We will have a time for sharing testimonies, presenting skits, Pastor Mike and Topher will do the teaching and then we have a time for Q & A with the students along with translators.

A Little Somethin' Somethin' for Everyone!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073412294431586258" style="FLOAT: left; Each day has provided different perspectives and opportunities. We talked tonight about establishing "stones of remembrance" or in the case of this high tech savvy generation, we will establish "pixels of remembrance". The students are well. They are persevering with joy and dedication to complete our VBS programs well. Tomorrow we visit another school and will present two separate chapels. Tomorrow will also be the last rotation for the VBS ministries. As the opportunity presents I will grab more pictures. We will have a chance to visit downtown tomorrow and do some more cultural exchange. Continue to hold us up in prayer. All is well. Just finished our second amazing debrief session. Who would have known that putting these students in a van for a few hours or sending them to a nursing home or setting them up in play yard full of tireless children would be the empetice for this kind of deep connection? Even though our days are busy and full, they are busy and full with each other. The outside distractions of work, school, tests and even family commitments have left them with the time and opportunity to develop these relationships. I am really surprised at how many of them are actually really "meeting" each other for the first time. Each group continues to experience the challenges and joy of VBS ministry that comes complete with a language barrier. These kids however are determined to find ways to connect and to work together to communicate with the beautiful children and dedicated teachers and faithful church community members that we are meeting. Once again, I will say you should be proud. It is however now time to refresh and sleep and prepare for the new adventure of the coming day. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. I have faithfully passed on the comments and felicitaciones that your have posted for your students. They each give you their own "shout out" back at you! I am on the hunt for a digital download from the other two teams. Know that I WILL be succesful. Hang in. Sincerely, Jan

The View from the Field

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5072669441183037122" style="FLOAT: left; Your students were able to play and share with the local children and to present their VBS program, along with games and crafts. These were some of the pictures that I was able to grab from team cameras. I will do my best to feature our other teams members as the week continues. We just finished a time of fellowship and lunch at the church after the morning presentation for a Kindergarten Chapel at a local Merida school. The special treat for the students after the school program was a quick trip to WalMart! You gotta love it! WalMart seems as popular and available these days as CocaCola. The teams will be rotating this afternoon and presenting their individual VBS programs at new places today. The plan is to gather together again tonight at the church for dinner and debrief and then off to the hotel for bed. I believe that I overheard some students today asking Pastor Mike for an early bedtime--or maybe that was me talking outloud!

All for now. Great kids. Good stuff happening. We just completed our debrief time after a very full and very long day and I was so blessed and encouraged by their deep thoughts and insights into this mission experience. I am actually finding it hard to put into words the thoughts that are swimming around in my head and heart this evening. What I can tell you is that they are really connecting as a class, they are going deeper in their relationships and trust for each other. It is hard to explain what I see happening but the friendship and comaradarie and compassion expressed is very satisfying to watch. Our groups experienced four distinct ministry situations from a convelenscent home to a very poor Mayan Village to a local community church and for another group...the outermost parts (i.e. a rural village). Many are being stretched through the frustration of the language barrier, the initial sense of helplessness and the struggle to push through without outwardly expressing that frustration. They are touched by the conditions of the communities and by the beautiful and open children that they encounter. As a result they are leaning hard on each other, recognizing gifts and talents they didn't realize they had and finding ways to support each other while working within their gifts. They shared tonight a variety of perpectives and goals that they hope to experience on this trip and I see that many of them are having that "light bulb moment" that this trip is more about what will happen for them personally than anything else. The give and take and honest sharing within the group is beyond what we could have hoped or asked for. Please know that everyone is healthy and well and I can you guarantee that they are sleeping well. I will share more specifics tomorrow once I am refreshed by a happy and welcome sleeptime! We go out at 9 a.m. tomorrow for a chapel service at a local school and then to the church for VBS practice and lunch and each team will switch locations share their program with another group. Once we are done every group will have been presented the whole story of God's love for the world with the focus on God, Jesus, the conflict of Sin and the walk of Faith. Stay tuned more to come. I love your kids! Water bottles are in abundant supply. The team is positive and working well together. Hearty breakfast this morning, followed by devotions. We took a quick tour of the downtown area and learned about the Mayan influence and history of the city.We have quite a cultural experience. I encouraged them to participate and pay attention as if their moms were there watching. Of course they all listened intently. :) We are now at the church and the school practicing our presentations and preparing our crafts. Lunch is at 1:00! Smells great. The VBS programs will run this afternoon and we will gather again this evening at the church for dinner and debrief. I will leave you now and keep you on the edge of your seats until I once again find myself with access to high technology. Have I told you all that your kids are great?! Everyone of them! We have Arrived!

Querida Familias del Equipo CCA Mexicano!

Hey guys! I know that you have been anxiously checking all day for news of the safe arrival of your students. Well your perseverence has finally been rewarded. The news is that all went well as we passed through our Miami airport experience.....no lost students, no lost passports, and best of all no lost luggage! We actually spent more time getting in and out of airports today than actual flight time! We were WARMLY greeted (in more ways than one) by the Aguayo family and members of the school and church. We then arrived and unpacked and settled into our quaint and historic hotel in downtown Merida. The city is beautiful and clean and full of opportunity for a great cultural experience. After a time for rest and relaxation our team gathered for our first evening meal together. Our students were introduced to The Broken Bread Meal, a dinner experience provided through the ministry of World Vision. It was a time where each one was given the opportunity to read about a young person from around the world who is living with a challening situation: orphans, refugees, homeless, living with AIDS. Pastor Mike then spoke to us about issues of hunger and uncertainty that many young people their own age face around the globe. We spent time at each table in prayer and support for these young people. We read their stories and saw their faces and had an opportunity to stand in the gap for them. We were then fed table by a table a simple bowl of corn meal porridge. This bowl of porridge was the equivalent of the meals that are provided in refugee camps in various parts of the world. These meals have all the nutrients and vitamins needed for a good basic meal. We were challenged to eat it all and to take the next few hours to consider physically and spiritually the impact and reality of huger that many face around the world today. We closed in prayer and thankfulness for God's abundant provision for us and we were challenged to consider what WE could do invidually as our response to being reminded of these global realities. You would be very proud of your young people. They have been respectful and positive and are walking through their first day here with joy and happy hearts. Tomorrow begins our first day of adventures. We will have breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and then be off to the church by 9 a.m. where will practice our VBS programs, prepare our crafts, practice our skits and continue to connect as teams for our first visit to the local villages. Please continue to stand in prayer for health, positive attitudes, team unity and personal growth! (That's all for me :) ) and of course for the students as well! :) Today has been a great day.....tomorrow awaits with great opportunites and adventures! Thank you for the privilege of getting to know your students better and for the opportunity to serve alongside with their youthful joy and enthusiasm. Feel free to send any comments. I will send pictures with the help of a few high tech students. You gotta love technology....once one gets it all figured out. More to come! Be sure and shop for any last minute items you need for the trip. Moms and Dads be sure and check those bags for all those essentials: clean underwear, hot weather clothes, a reusable water bottle and that all important toothbrush! Be sure and check their training manual for their packing lists. We meet at the HUB at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 3rd. If you were on the latest list of missing paperwork be sure and stop by the check-in table and fill in the gaps!
